Obituary of Gil Wescott
WARRENSBURG: Gilbert Wayne Wescott, born Gilbert Lewis Winslow Jr., passed away Sunday, December 22, 2024, at Albany Medical Center Hospital with all 3 of his children by his side.
Gil was born on January 4, 1961, to Barbara (Bly) and Gilbert Winslow, and was later adopted by his stepfather and “Dad”, Walter Wescott. The family moved around for part of Gil’s youth, but Warrensburg was always home. During his school years he played basketball and football; enjoyed art, music, cars, and guitars; and made several life-long friends before graduating from Warrensburg Central School with the class of 1979.
After school, Gil worked in the printing industry for many years. He worked in various print shops, traveling to multiple states to work on running presses, enforcing safety measures, and design work. He met many colleagues who became lifelong friends throughout his career and after receiving his first personal computer, Gil spent years learning the ins-and-out of typography and graphic design. He left the print shops and started his own business, Press F1, where he maintained his connection to the printing industry from the comfort of his home. Gil worked on typography and design for many local publications and helped create and modify logos and business cards for many businesses. He had a keen eye for fonts – with over 100,000 in his library—and could tell even the most similar fonts apart. Gil took great pride in his work and hated the thought of missing a deadline, to the extent of working from his hospital bed just a couple months ago.
Gil traveled the world, space, and time through his love of movies, books, video games, exploring his general curiosities on the internet, and his incredibly vivid dreams. In Second Life, he met people from all different cultures and countries. He would travel to historic times by reading books like Shogun and Clan of the Cave Bear. In the Horizon games, he would play as Aloy, hunting larger-than-life machines with a bow and arrow. His movie library contained hundreds of movies of all genres. He loved anything that allowed him to “get the full experience.” He found his peace sitting on the banks of the Hudson River, or overlooking Echo Lake, and had the utmost appreciation for nature, stones, crystals, reiki, and good energy. Above all of this, Gil loved a good conversation. He could talk for hours and would be the first to admit that he was “rambling on” or “just wouldn’t shut up.” Those conversations will be sorely missed.
Gilbert was predeceased by his mother Barbara, father Walter, biological father Gilbert, and a brother David Wescott.
Left to cherish his memory are: his son Michael Wescott; his daughters Nastassia (Erik) Bezrutczyk and Gabraella Wescott; his grandchildren Saige and Jacy Wescott; his brothers Andy (Pam) Wescott, John (JaNann) Winslow, and Wakely Wescott; his sisters Gail (Phil) Parker, Jane McKinney (Rick Parry), Anna (Vance) Plante, and Juanita Winslow; several nieces and nephews; his good friend, first wife, and the mother of Michael and Nastassia, Robin Fifield; his second wife and the mother of Gabraella, Gail Patterson; his buddy Chuck Altman; and many friends, colleagues through the years, and loved-ones. He will be greatly missed.
Gil’s family would like to express their gratitude and special thanks to: Dr. Hilton Hosannah at Albany Medical Center Hospital (AMCH) for his tremendous kindness, efforts, and care; the doctors, nurses, and staff of the AMCH Surgical ICU, as well as C8; the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Glens Falls Hospital Emergency Department, ICU, and T6; and Warrensburg EMS.
