Jay was a substitute teacher in our school district for many years. In that time, I was fortunate enough to have Jay cover my Earth Science and/or Physics classes many times. It was always a great relief to know Jay was there, and that some real science was being done in my absence (typically not the case as a science teacher when you're absent).
More significantly for me though, and therefore, where I am feeling such a deep loss, were the times when Jay was in for a fellow colleague. Over the many years, Jay and I spent many hours in great conversation on a wide variety of topics, including science and nature of course, but mostly the focus of the conversation was on our children. My kids are 4 and 7 years old as I write this, so Jay would often provide great wisdom from his experience, to this new father. We always shared such wonderful conversations on our shared trials and tribulations, and the pure joy of Fatherhood. The conversation was always initiated by Jay, and always started the same way, "How are your little ones?", and always with the same big, genuine grin, that conveyed true interest, concern, and our shared deep love of our children. I was always genuinely happy to see Jay in the building, because I knew at some point in the day we would find, even for just a few minutes, time to have a chat and share in our sacred, common bond as Fathers. I will profoundly miss those now, precious moments. Whatever the topic of conversation, what impressed me most was the unwavering positivity that shone through Jay. Even when discussing a tough moment, like trying to get a complex science concept across to a resistant tennager, or the unenviable challenges of homeownership, Jay always delivered it with a genuine, heartfelt smile. Without any exaggeration, Jay was one of the nicest people I ever knew.
You are deeply missed, old friend.

As I remember jay I think of the memory’s of when I was young and would see him in church as I grew older and got into higher grades I would see him at my school as a substitute as we all know there are some good substitutes and some bad but jay wasn't just a good one he was an amazing substitute. Making many kids laugh and smile. Hearing of his passing made me see kids in school at lost because of the way he touched so many life’s in school and out side of school. he always had a smile on his face when you walked into the classroom that lit up the room. he was a kind and caring man and so many will miss him.

Some of my favorite memories are of early morning trips to The Gunks. Hiking with Robin, Jay, and friends. The familiar clink of climbing equipment as we walked. Jay taught us to climb. He was patient and kind, loved the woods, and loved the Lord. I think it was on one of these trips that Robin began to realize she really liked this wonderful guy.
I am so thankful that I had Robin and Jay to call on during my many challenges and moves as a military spouse. I am forever grateful for their friendship, wisdom and prayers.
I was at the airport, the clouds brilliantly lit, when I heard of Jay's final ascent to heaven. I thought what an amazing view he must have of the splendor of God's creation.
Psalm 19:1 "The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of His hands."
Here on earth, though, his absence is painfully felt and he will be forever missed. My prayers are with his family, that the Lord would cover them with His presence, healing and strength. Climb on! Thank you Jay.

Your love of family will always be remembered, through memories, family and friends. You were a tremendous loving father, uncle and brother to me and my family. We were blessed to know you and look forward to when we are all together again.
Psalm 116:15 - Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants.
1 John 1:7 - But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
I will always admire your devotion to The Lord, and how you lived your life in a Christ-centered way every day. You were a great example for family, friends and all you came across in your life. I am honored to have known you, been related to you and witness the affect you had on so many lives.
