Obituary of Vernon H. Smith

Vernon H. Smith, Sr., 68, of Route 28N, passed away peacefully, Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Glens Falls Hospital, following a long illness.
Born June 15, 1946 in Cornwall, he was the son of the late Vernon W. and Evelyn (Wilson) Smith.
Vern spent his youth in Cornwall, where he attended Cornwall High School.
He was drafted into the United States Army in December of 1966, where he honorably served his country in Germany.
Vern was employed by Shop Rite Super Market in Vails Gate for over 30 years, after his retirement he relocated to Minerva, in 2002, where he frequently visited his hunting camp since the 1970’s.
He enjoyed spending his time hunting, fishing, and reloading ammunition, as well as listening to “the oldies, but goodies”.
Vern was a lifelong member and past president for six years of the Black Rock Fish & Game Club.
In addition to his parents, Vernon was predeceased by his previous wife, Florence Smith, and a grandson, Zachary Smith.
He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly nine years, Dolores M. Smith of Minerva; two sons, Vernon Smith, Jr. and his wife, Ashley, of Johnsburg, and Scott D. Smith and his wife, Stephanie, and her daughters, Sarah and Samantha, all of Alaska; three grandchildren, Hunter Sharrow, and Autumn and Taylor Smith; Lester Smith and his wife, JoAnn, Dave Smith, and Harry Smith. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends may call on Vernon’s family from 4-7 pm, Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at Alexander-Baker Funeral Home, 3809 Main Street, Warrensburg.
A time of reflection and life tribute will take place following the visitation, at 7 pm, at the funeral home; friends are urged to share a memory or story.
Graveside services with military honors will be conducted at 11 am, Thursday, November 13, 2014 at the Minerva Baptist Cemetery, Minerva.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations in Vernon’s memory to the Renal Center at Glens Falls Hospital, 3 Broad St. Plaza, Glens Falls, NY 12801.
Vernon’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Gray, Dr. Mihindu, and the staff at the Renal Center for the care and compassion provided throughout his illness.
