Obituary of Clarence E. Beattie

Johnsburg: Clarence E. Beattie, 70, of Washer Hill Road, passed away peacefully, Tuesday evening at Glens Falls Hospital in the presence of God, his wife, Vonda, and his son, Scott, after a long battle with colon cancer. Born September 12, 1937 in Clayton, NY, he was the son of the late Leroy and Sarah Elfreda (McNall) Beattie. He and his wife, Vonda (Varnum) Beattie were married for 45 years. They resided in Johnsburg. In their early years together, he worked for the town highway department and then went on to drive school bus at Johnsburg Central School from 1967 to 1979. He then served four terms as Johnsburg Town Highway Superintendent from 1979 to 1987. He returned to Johnsburg Central School as a school bus driver until his retirement in 1995. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, and country western music. He is survived by his wife Vonda, of Johnsburg; his son, Dr. Scott Beattie and his wife, Elena (Dylis) Beattie of New Hartford; three grandchildren, Jillian, 13; Reid, 12; and Laurel, 9; his four brother-in-laws: Winston, Benson, Calvin (and wife, Bonnie), and Lowell (and wife, Deb) Varnum, along with many nieces, nephews, and good friends. Friends may call on Clarence’s family from 1 to 3 pm on Saturday, January 26, at the Alexander Funeral Home, 4479 State Route 28, North River. The funeral service will follow the visitation at 3 pm Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Diane Marquit, Pastor of the North Creek United Methodist Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Johnsburg EMS or to the Johnsburg Dollars for Scholars or to a charity of ones choice.
