Obituary of Myron H. Cameron
Please share a memory of Myron to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Athol:
Myron H. Cameron, 87, of Cameron Road, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at the very home he was born in on March 27, 1924 to the late Don H. and Beatrice (Reynolds) Cameron.
Myron attended grammar school in a one room school house on High Street in Thurman before graduating from Warrensburg Central School in 1941. He continued his schooling at a college in California, where he studied Aeronautical Engineering.
The lure of his family’s lumber business back home became strong enough for him to return to Athol for good.
With the help of his father and brother, Donald, the trio owned and operated the Cameron Lumber Company for many years. The mill was run by water power until after the passing of his father, Don. It was then powered by diesel fuel before its closing in 2000.
Myron was baptized at the Athol Methodist Church, and most recently he and his wife attended the Warrensburg Free Methodist Church. He was a member of the Adirondack Lumberman’s Association, Goodnow Flow Association of Newcomb, and the Chestertown Conservation Club; he also served for many years as a N.Y.S Fire Warden for the Thurman area. He was an avid outdoorsman, who took great pride in his hunting and fishing abilities, along with being a great steward of the land he owned and loved.
Myron could make or repair anything, whether it was mechanical or involved woodworking.
One of Myron’s greatest enjoyments, following his retirement, was a cross-country trip that he and his wife, Lillie took to Alaska, sightseeing and fishing for Alaskan salmon.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother, Donald R. Cameron; nephews, Michael and Donald R. Cameron; and great nephews, Cameron and Leigh Dupuis.
Myron leaves behind his beloved wife of 63 years, Lillie (Doss) Cameron of Athol; nieces, Ula Cameron and her companion, John “Gator” Gates of Queensbury, Clara Vasak and her husband, Al, and Virginia Balling, all of Athol; along with his nephew, Giles Jennings and his wife, Susan, also of Athol; and many great nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Myron’s family from 5 to 8 pm, Friday, April 8, 2011, at the Alexander-Baker Funeral Home, 3809 Main Street, Warrensburg.
A funeral service to celebrate his life will be conducted at 11 am, Saturday, April 9th at the funeral home with the Rev. Richard C. Leonard, retired Pastor of the Warrensburg Free Methodist Church officiating.
Spring burial will take place 10 am, Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at the family plot in Cameron Cemetery, Thurman.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations in Myron’s memory to the High Peaks Hospice, 667 Bay Rd, Queensbury, NY 12804.
