Obituary of William F. Maher

Warrensburg: William F. Maher, 80, of Cloverleaf Drive, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Wednesday morning, February 14, 2018 at his home. Born February 5, 1938 in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Austin and Catherine (McCarthy) Maher. Bill was raised and lived in Brooklyn. He worked for the NYC Board of Education in Plant Operations from 1972-1999 and moved to his vacation home in Warrensburg after retiring. Warrensburg is the home to his wife’s niece and nephew, James and Jean Cronin. As a baseball enthusiast, Bill coached many teams in Brooklyn and Queens. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Brooklyn Cadets Baseball Club, where he mentored many athletes who made it to the major leagues. His greatest love was opera and classical music. He conducted an opera club in his home in Queens for 12 years, in Brooklyn for 9 years and for the past 18 years in Warrensburg. People who loved music joined him monthly for an afternoon of music. His love of opera took him many places including Italy, London and Austria. In addition to his parents, he is also predeceased by his brother, Austin and his sister in law, Maureen. Left to honor his memory is his loving wife of 44 years, Rosemary Maher; two cherished young adults, Christopher Carlson and Alissa Haller, and many nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12 noon, Monday, February 19 at St. Cecilia’s Church, 3802 Main Street, Warrensburg. Fr. Paul Cox will preside. Friends may call on Bill’s family one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Rite of committal will take place in St. Cecilia’s Cemetery in the spring.
