Obituary of Donald L. Towne

North River: Donald L. Towne, 89, formerly of State Rt. 28, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at the Adirondack Tri-County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Creek. Born February 19, 1920 in Cochrane, Ontario, Canada, he was the son of the late Harry and Olive (La Prairie) Towne. Don was a soldier in the Royal Canadian Army during WW II seeing combat in Sicily and England. Don managed his Aunt Ethel Hennessy’s General Store in North River for many years, before taking over ownership in the early 1960’s. He was a well known and respected businessman in North River. He and the General Store have been missed since his retirement in 2006. One of Don’s favorite pastimes included visiting his aunt in Blue Mountain Lake. He was a charter member of the North River Vol. Fire Co. His brothers and sisters, Harriett Metcalf, Claire Hopkins, Reginald Towne, J.H. Towne and Maurice Towne have all predeceased him. Survivors include his sister, Audrey Greig and her husband, Ian of Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada; special friend and neighbor, Barbara Douglas of North River; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call from 2-4 pm Monday, April 20 at the Alexander Funeral Home, Inc, 4479 State Rt. 28, North River. A service to celebrate his life will follow the visitation at 4 pm at the funeral home with the Rev. Trudy Pettibone, Pastor of the North Creek Baptist Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may take the form of donations to the North River Vol. Fire Co., PO Box, North River, NY 12856.
