Warrensburg: George R. Nemec, 58 of Warrensburg, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at the Glens Falls Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in New York City, he was the son of the late Richard and Mary (Minden) Nemec. George began his schooling at the Monroe Street School and H. Frank Carey School. His parents moved the family to Warrensburg in 1963. He went on to graduate from the Warrensburg High School in 1969. Following his graduation, he attended the Cybernetics Institute in Albany and also attended the Concord Commercial College in New Hampshire where he received his Associates Degree in computer programming. In 1972, he met and married the love of his life, Nancy A. Burritt and the couple wed on October 14 of that year in Saratoga Springs. He began his working career at Curtis Lumber in Warrensburg, and later with Stewarts Ice Cream for 10 year in Saratoga before joining the family business, Nemec’s Sport Shop in 1985. George continued building on his father’s business, with the help of his wife and son, making it the successful establishment it is today. His family and his business were his top priorities, but he was also very involved in the community, holding numerous positions including the Warrensburg Planning Board, past president of the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Warrensburg Lions Club, and past chief of the Warrensburg Volunteer Fire Department. When George wasn’t working at the store, he could be found riding his Harley Davidson. He enjoyed vacationing with his good friends. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Robert Nemec and his wife, Janet. George is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Nancy; his son, Christopher Nemec and his wife Brooke and his grand boys, Jacob and Hunter of Warrensburg; his twin brother, Joseph Nemec and his wife, Gigi of Lake George; his sister, Dorothy Nemec of Ballston Spa; along with several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by his “special girls,” Abigail and Doodle, his cherished yellow labs. Friends may call on George’s family from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm, Sunday, May 2 at the Alexander-Baker Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg. A brief service of farewell by members of the Warrensburg Vol. Fire Co. will take place at 3:30 pm Sunday during the visitation at the funeral home. Pall bearers will include Paul Nichols, Tony Cresente, Austin Markey, Larry Lawler, Justin Duell, and Kevin Walker. Honorary bearers will be Wally Ross and Warren Schloss. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the C.R. Wood Cancer Center at the Glens Falls Hospital.
