I stayed with another member of Shannon in September 2022 and came to help Dan once a week. I fondly remember his humor, thoughtfulness, and kindness. Two memories that stick out are going kayaking with him and sharing a beer with him on his porch after sunset. I am glad I met him.

I met Danny at FLC in 1976. I think he was working maintenance for his brother Jerry. He then became a counselor and had many other roles at FLC. He was a great story teller. Who can forget him telling the story of Sam McGee at Sunday campfires. The Combs family has left such a legacy at FLC and Danny was no exception. He was a true environmentalist and he loved the Adirondack’s. I will always remember the rafting trip he planned for counselors on the Hudson River. I also remember shooting baskets with him in total darkness one night after camp ended. He was a great guy. I will miss seeing him at FLC for reunions. My condolences to his family and to all those who he touched.

Dan and I went to school together. In our senior year we had to write a short story for English class. Dan's was so good our teacher asked Dan to read it to all of us. As he got into the story we all leaned in toward him to capture every word he said. He told a spooky tale involving an empty rocking chair. It was so good the room exploded with applause when he finished.
I will fondly remember Danny with that half grin kind of smirk on his face making you wonder what he was going to do or what prank he had already done, and waiting for his audience to find out! He was smart, super talented and fun to be around. My thoughts go out to all his friends, family, and those who loved him the most. He will be missed.

I met Dan at Forest Lake Camp in 1971. He was 10 and I was 11.
I have a vivid memory of a conversation with him about living in the yellow house and being “the closest kid to camp. RIP old friend.

Danny performed "The cremation of Sam McGee" by Robert Service at the FLC Junior campfire in 1985, which I have never forgotten. Years later he recited it onto a tape for me while driving to the airport and I still play that tape. We have since been fortunate to hear Bob Miller recite the poem in the Mulemute Saloon in Ester Gold Camp in Alaska,. That special evening in the saloon brought back images of Dan pacing slowly around the campfire's flickering flames holding us all in the moment, hanging on each & every intoned spoken word. Danny lived his years to the max and made a lot of lives richer for it.

Q: How did you meet Daniel?
A: Dan and his brother Russ were helping me with the waterfront and probably taking odds on how long I would last since I was mechanically inept. They were generous then and throughout the time I knew them. Dan was a Renaissance man of the wilderness and FLC does indeed bear his signs throughout. He will be missed by all save the brookies he used to plunder with gusto from Adirondack streams!
