Obituary of Barbara L. O'Reilly

LAKE GEORGE:  Barbara L. O’Reilly, 80, of Lake George, NY, and Sarasota, FL, passed away unexpectedly on December 2, 2024, at Glens Falls Hospital following a brief illness.

Barbara was born on March 12, 1944, in Akron, OH, to the late Carl and Donna (Pelton) Bement. She spent her early years in the Akron area and graduated from Buchtel High School in 1962. Barbara went on to attend Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in teaching in 1965. During a girls’ trip to Lake George, she met Patrick O’Reilly. Their connection quickly grew into a love that led to 58 wonderful years of marriage. The couple wed on June 4, 1966.

Barbara dedicated her teaching career to the Canton City School District, retiring in 1999 as a high school social studies teacher. Her deep love for history and her passion for Lake George often inspired her lessons and enriched her students’ learning experiences. In 1970, Barbara and Patrick built a cottage on Lake George, which became their beloved summer retreat for many years. Preferring to avoid the cold winters, the couple spent their winters in Sarasota, FL, enjoying the warmth and sunshine.

Barbara discovered a passion for running at the age of 40, an activity she embraced wholeheartedly. She also found great joy in boating, cheering on her beloved Ohio State football team, and delving into history. Her church family at Caldwell Presbyterian Church, Lake George will deeply miss her, as she was cherished for her role as a greeter and usher extraordinaire. Barbara and Pat rarely missed a Sunday service, and her infectious humor, masterful storytelling, and quick wit could brighten anyone's day. With just a brief hello, Barbara had a remarkable gift for finding common ground and making everyone feel truly welcome and at home.

Besides her parents, Barbara is predeceased by her brother Dick Bement.

Barbara is survived by her devoted husband, Patrick O’Reilly; her beloved children, Erin O’Reilly and Sean O’Reilly; her sister-in-law, Mary Jane O’Reilly; her dear cousin, Gwynne DeLong; and her “second son,” Seth Harris. Each will forever cherish her memory and the joy she brought into their lives.
