John and I worked together in the 1960s as young reporters in Newark. He drove an unreliable sports car, a Triumph TR Something, that compelled him to be an amateur mechanical engineer. That he later built an airplane and flew it to Alaska and back is only a little surprising.
Even then John was a young man of many talents, ideas and insights, as well as a skilled reporter and a graceful writer of usually gross, graceless news. When he left that job, without another immediately in mind, I thought he had lost his head. "No," he said. "You and I are different. You were born to report news. You have to do this. I need to find out what I have to do."
As it turned out, there were many things that he had to do-- and do them he did. I am glad that our lives intersected, and sad that his has ended.
Goodbye, old friend. I don't think there's another place to go now, but if there is I will look for you when I arrive.
