Geary's fictional hero was Hoss Cartwright, middle son of Ben Cartwright of the 60's TV series "Bonanza". Geary was so much like the fictional Hoss, that it became his family nickname. Geary went so far as to name his Chestertown home "The Ponderosa", the name of the Cartwright ranch.
Like Hoss Cartwright, Geary was a kind man, but one who never shrank from a fight or would ever back down in the face of adversity.
Geary was a great initiator, who would always follow through. He patented inventions and started a business. He would organize fishing trips on Lake George for himself, his brothers, nephews and friends and what great times we all had. One summer he organized a family vacation at Hyannisport, MA on Cape Cod after reading an ad in the "New York Times" of a large house for rent. We all went; Harry & Pam, Phil and Lolly, Kathy and I and all our kids. It turned out the house belonged to a Mr. Fitzgerald who was a cousin of Rose Kennedy. Breakfasts for the kids always featured "Hosscuits" especially concocted by "Uncle Hoss". I showed my brothers how my dad and I would chase and catch blueclaw crabs on the Vineyard when I was a youngster and Geary and I caught quite a few in a salt pond on the Cape, but one morning Geary and Harry disappeared soon to return with a bushel of live lobsters they had just purchased from the captain of a lobster boat down at the harbor. Of course the crabs were forgotten and we feasted for the rest of the week on those lobsters!
