I have so many fond memories of Bob…far too many to fit in this book. (And some are too colorful to include!)
Bob and Gert’s marriage and their devotion to family stand out as beautiful examples for all of us to follow.
Bob and Gert’s family was not just their children and grandchildren - it included everyone who came through the gate into Camp Read. I had the privilege of working with Bob at camp for 10 summers; five of which my family joined me. Bob did so much to make our lives more comfortable at camp, from the swing set to the play area to checking regularly to make sure all was good. When I decided to “retire” from summer camp, I had to break the news to my then 4-year-old son. The conversation went something like this:
Me: Ben, we will not be going back to camp this summer.
Ben: But Daddy, why not?
Me: Because I want to do more things in the summer with you and Mommy.
Ben: What kind of things?
Me: Things like going to the beach.
Ben: But Daddy, there’s a beach at Ranger Bob’s camp!
Out of the mouths of babes…….
Bob, with Gert by his side, touched so many lives of all ages. As Scouts, we are taught to leave a place better than we found it. Bob most definitely did that. The world is a better place for having had Bob as a resident, and we are all better people for having had him as a part of our lives.

At one point I got the nickname at camp of 'Photo Matt'. When I was around Bob, I was usually working, not taking photos. ('Gotta go boys, daylight's burning!'). I did get a few good ones though. Most of these likely date from around 1983 or 1984. They give me great memories.

Bob was proud of his work at Camp Read, and he had much to be proud of. He graded Rose Drive. He built the Pearlman building. He upgraded a lot of buildings large and small. One of his proudest times came after one of the lowest. After the dining hall burned in March of 1988, he worked hard to find alternatives to keep camp open that summer. He got the old Tomahawk Dining Hall back in working shape, camp opened, and nobody complained about the walk up the road three times per day. It was fitting that the new dining hall was dedicated to Bob and Gert when it opened in 1989.
I learned a lot from Bob about how to work and how to live. I learned that honesty and humility are the best way to work with others. When you make a mistake, come forward and admit it, learn from it, and move on.
Thank you Bob for being a great mentor.

Q: How did you meet Robert?
A: Bob Newton brought a lot of laughter and joy to the short span of our lives working construction on I-87 and maybe also at the rock crushing plant south of Chestertown. Just out of Chestertown High School, I was a summertime college student working as a laborer around large construction equipment. Bob was the likable, hard-working and always friendly man who came around regularly on the job sites to service/fix the equipment. He always had an unlit cigar in his mouth and someone in our crowd of pranksters would attempt to light Bob's cigar. We all failed at that impossible task, but delighted in Bob's response as he verbalized his displeasure in chasing us away, usually with a large "monkey wrench" in his hand. All of us, including Bob had a good laugh in the end. Just knowing Bob during a brief span of his life left me with a lasting memory of his great character, quest for hard work and fun while doing it. My thoughts and prayers are with the Newton family as you cope with the sorrow of his loss. Probably unknown to Bob, he made a lasting impression upon me and others by his character and presence in our lives. He will be missed by many.

Hi all, Sorry to hear of Bob’s passing, knew Bob all the years he was ranger, my best memory’s of Bob, I cooked ski weekends for 17 years, and Bob always made sure he was at the old farmhouse at 11:00 to 12:00 so he was able to have a hot fresh sticky bun or two, and was fond of my tin can raisin bread, took home for Gert and him. I spent 49 summer weeks at Read and have a lot of fond memory’s of Bob. RIP Bob.
With love. Sincerely Bob Rice

For decades it was an annual pleasure to arrive during Staff Week & get "special personal assignments" from Newt' === most are
still "standing"& each one always
brings Bob to mind as I walk around Camp Waubeeka. Just one fond memory == when a Scout came with a complaint of a broken orthodontic wire , Bob would summon me, hand me his totally rusty pair of pliers & ask that Scout, " Do you want Dr. Rakov to cut it off ?! " If the answer was a "YES!" then we knew it really needed attention (with a clean instrument from the Health Lodge) I always held him in such awe that it is strange to see his birthdate was
as close to mine as it is ! ... which
Is just another reminder of what a paramount figure he always was! I know he's in Heaven &
encouraging other souls with his memorable, " We're a gainin' !! "

I worked with Bob in the 60’s when I was on the maintenance crew at Camp Read. He was an outstanding boss and an even better person. I learned many a life lesson from him, especially on how to do a good job, no matter what the job was, and to be proud of the work you did. RIP Ranger Bob.
