Bakers Mills:
Wilda “Billie” K. Martin, 61, of Bartman Road, passed away peacefully, Saturday, June 19, 2010 at her home, after a long battle with lung cancer.
Born July 26, 1948 in Bakers Mills, she was the daughter of the late Lester and Althea (Hitchcock) Washburn.
She married her soul mate, Charles D. Martin on May 13, 1977, who cared for and comforted her throughout her illness.
Billie was a life long resident of Bakers Mills and she was very active in the support and care of those in the community. Always there to lend a helping hand, her quick wit and smile will be missed by many. She was a devout wife, mother, and grandmother, who cherished time spent with her daughter and granddaughters and being surrounded by her loving family.
She attended Johnsburg Central School, received her GED, and then went on to later graduate from Adirondack Community College.
Billie was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and Johnsburg United Methodist Church for several years and enjoyed helping serve at many of the election dinners. She enjoyed being around people and helping those who needed it.
Besides her parents, Billie is predeceased by an infant son, Charles Martin, Jr.; her sister, Alberta J. Ross Mosher; and brother, Robert L. Washburn.
Other than her husband, Charles of Bakers Mills, she is survived by her daughter, Laura Bean, and her husband, James of Dover Plains; granddaughters, Kathryn and Rebecca Bean, also of Dover Plains; sister, Vonda Engles, and her husband, Edward of Hudson Falls; brothers, Gerald W. Washburn, and his wife, Marilla of Hartford, and Kenneth L. Washburn, and his wife, Sandra of Hudson Falls; along with several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service to celebrate Billie’s beautiful life will be conducted 1:00 pm Sunday, June 27 at the Johnsburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jackie Mueller, Pastor and Rev. Shannon Murray, Billie’s niece co-officiating. Friends are encouraged to participate with fond memories of time spent with Billie.
She requested that there be no calling hours.
Billie’s family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the North Creek Rite Aid, North Creek Health Center and Dr. Dan Way for all their help and support.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations in Billie’s name to the Missions and Outreach fund, R.W.J. United Methodist Church, PO Box 98, Johnsburg, NY 12843.
