Commissioner Mills made me proud to be an educator. He understood my methodology as an educator and publicly put his stamp on my pedagogy. It was great that some of us had the chance to meet him in Brooklyn. His family did a good job with him. God has said, "Richard, well done."

May God be your comfort at this sad time. My condolences to your family. At the present time, there is a sense of helplessness when someone we love dies. Many ask how does one get through this time? Let me share a few scriptural verses that really helps me. Prayer is extremely valuable at this time, 2 Corinthians 4:7 says that God can give us," power beyond what is normal ". As you cry and mourn over the loss please remember Jesus Christ spoke about a real hope at John 5:28 "all those in the memorial tomb will hear his voice and come out ". Jesus was referring to the resurrection hope!

I worked closely with Commissioner Mills for 14 years, serving as his legal counsel for all 14 years of his Commissionership. I learned more from him than from anyone in my career., sometimes by just watching his example. He was a man of unassailable integrity, limitless energy and enormous intellect. He cared deeply about the work we did, because it was in service to the public-children especially. He gave me the opportunity to be part of something very special--and he was surely someone very special. I will miss him and will never forget him. Deepest sympathies to Judy, his sisters and his mother.

Please accept my deep sympathy. Rick had a long and distinguished career- Commissioner of Education in 2 states. I served for 15 years on the Board of Regents, most of the time with Rick.. He was greatly admired. I also served on his Dad's Board at the American College. I know how terrible it must be for you to be left without Rick. I hope the great memories of a long life with hi will sustain you at this awful time. Harry

I was so saddened to learn of the Commissioner's passing. He was a wonderful man and a gifted educator. I worked with him on a few projects during his time as commissioner. He spoke with courage and conviction and always displayed empathy. May he rest in peace.

My condolences to all. In my years as president of the NewYork State United Teachers, I know of no one that I interacted with in NYSED that was as sincere and concerned about finding ways to work together on behalf of New York’s young people. When it wasn’t very popular to agree or support the work of a teachers union, Commissioner Mills would always speak up for positions we shared. I recall many meetings in his office and mine where we shared coffee and talked about the larger issues and ways to work together. We shared a belief that addressing poverty was critical to addressing the problems in education. On this issue and many others, he was always willing to speak truth to power. Peace and blessings to all, Richard Iannuzzi

Rick Mills was an inspiration and a guide to all of us. When asked for help, he would not hesitate but help to his full capacity. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Judy as Rick will be greatly missed, but we feel blessed for the years that we have been able to call Rick Mills our friend.

I had the privilege of working for/with Rick for many years at the NYS Education Department. He was a man of true caring and integrity. His personal and professional ethics were not something he talked about, he just lived them, and by doing so, he set an example and expectation for those who worked with him. I am happy that I had the pleasure of seeing him several times in the years since he retired, most recently just a couple of weeks ago. He genuinely cared about the people he worked with and, most especially, the people he worked for. He will be missed.
