Obituary of John W. McConnell

Ashburn, VA: John William McConnell, 56, passed away April 5, 2017. Born December 26, 1960, he was the son of Judy (Freebern) McConnell of Chestertown, and the late John J. McConnell. John grew up in Chestertown, where he was a graduate of North Warren Central School, Class of 1979. He furthered his education, graduating from Mohawk Community College in 1981, and from Plattsburgh State College in 1985. He entered in the Unites States Air Force Officers Training School in 1985. Following his retirement from the Air Force in 1995, John went to work for the government, retiring in January of 2017. He loved biking, hiking, skiing, and visiting all the local breweries. Besides his father, John is predeceased by a brother, Jim McConnell, brother-in-law, Charles Gangemi, and many aunts and uncles. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife, Laura (McFarland) McConnell; two daughters, Cayley and Alysa; a brother, Robert McConnell of NJ; sisters, Sharon Gangemi of NC, and Kim, Lori, and Missy McConnell, all of Chestertown; nephews, LCpl Travis McConnell and John Viera; and nieces, Gina, Maria, and Angela Gangemi, and Madelyn Jansky. He also leaves behind several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Private services with full military honors were held April 12, 2017 at the Colonial Funeral Home, with internment to follow in Union Cemetery, Leesburg, VA.
