Shirley Boland, 93, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 13, 2011 at Glens Falls Hospital.
Born January 29, 1913 in New York, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Ethlyn (Moore) Barry.
Shirley was a 1942 graduate of Cooper Union School of Art. She married Arthur Francis Boland May 12, 1945, a year later the couple relocated to Brant Lake. They resided at her husband’s place of business, Curtis S. Read Boy Scouts of America Reservation, until moving to their home on Route 8.
After raising her children, Shirley returned college, where she obtained a teaching certificate in 1973. She taught Art for BOCES and at Abraham Wing in Glens Falls before retiring in 1980. She was quite the accomplished artist, having several art shows to display her most recent paintings. She painted signs for numerous churches and business in and around the Brant Lake area.
While enjoying their retirement, Shirley and her husband drove cross-country for some entertainment and adventure.
Shirley was a member of the Horicon Ladies Auxiliary, Horicon Historical Society, The Horicon Senior Citizens, and also served as a BSA Den Mother.
Other than her parents, Shirley is predeceased by her beloved husband of 52 years, Art, who passed away on September 15, 2001.
She leaves behind a son, Geoffrey Boland and his wife, Alayne of FL; daughters, Denise Boland of Glens Falls, and Diane Barnes and her husband, Thomas of Olmstedville; granddaughters, Heather Dickey and her husband, Paul, Chandra Eldridge and her husband, Royce, and Emily Barnes; great grandchildren, Miranda, Adrianna, and Nikia Eldridge, and Alexander and Nathan Dickey; brother, John Barry; and her sister, Ethlyn McDonough, both of MA.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am, Friday at the Episcopal Church of the Messiah, 269 Glen Street, Glens Falls.
Spring Internment will take place 2 pm, Saturday, May 21, 2011 in Brant Lake Cemetery.
