STONY CREEK: Barbara Frances DeVoe, 82, quietly passed away early on Wednesday, August 6, 2014, at Glens Falls Hospital after a long struggle with COPD. Born November 28, 1931 in Jonesville, NY, she was the daughter of the late Reuben and Esther Marguerite (Lasher) Martin. She grew up on her grandfather’s farm in Clifton Park and attended schools in Mechanicville. In January of 1950, she married Lloyd “Spec” DeVoe. They spent 51 years together before his death in April of 2001. They moved their family, to Stony Creek, from Halfmoon in the late 1950's, in order to work at Lee's Restaurant, which was owned by her husband's parents. Spec worked as a cook and bartender and she worked as a server until the restaurant closed in the mid 1960's. She then concentrated on raising her children and keeping house. She did, however work at O'Neill's Tavern during Mountain Days weekends for many years. Barb had a great sense of humor and she passed that on to her children. A voracious reader, she loved mysteries and crime novels. It was nothing to hear that she read 5-6 books a week. When she was not reading she was doing crosswords, and not the easy ones, either. She took care of her husband for many years before his death and no one ever heard her complain. Upon his passing she joined the Stony Creek Senior Citizens club, where she served as Secretary. After spending so much time being a care giver she finally concentrated on herself. She was happily available to go to rummage sales, out to eat, on picnics, to shows, to meetings, or just for a ride. She was also a familiar face during voting time as she sat on the Board of Elections for Stony Creek for over 20 years, only missing the last election due to failing health. She was the cornerstone of her family and is already sorely missed by both them and her many friends. Especially dear to her were Fran Winslow, Lori Baker and Jack Fausner, whose late wife Eileen was a close friend. She disliked missing any time with her senior club and spoke fondly of the fun they had when they took the Senior Bus to go shopping in Glens Falls. Besides her parents and her husband, Barbara was predeceased by her son, Victor, and her sister Jane Avery. She is survived by four daughters, Linda Champlin, Darcy (Stephen) Rathje; Dawn DeVoe, and Sheri DeVoe, one son, Dennis (Estella) DeVoe; eight grandchildren: Leigh Champlin, Chanda (Todd) Dashnaw; Jason DeVoe, Jessica DeVoe, Jorden DeVoe, Linda Marialynn DeVoe, Warren DeVoe, and Tanya DeVoe. Her brother in law Irving and his wife Ann, plus great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins on both sides of the family. Per her request there will be no service. She will be cremated and her remains returned to her family. There will be an open house Celebration of Life planned in order for her family and friends to gather and exchange stories and memories. The date, time and place will be decided upon in the near future and everyone will be notified. Her children would like to thank the nurses and staff on 3W at Glens Falls Hospital who made a very painful time much easier to deal with by their kind ministrations and compassion.
