Kathryn “Kate” Goodman Frentzos, 102, RN, BSN, Major ANCR, Retired, formerly of Warrensburg, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at the Adirondack Tri-County Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, North Creek.
Born September 20, 1912 in Athol, she was the daughter of the late James P. and Frances (Shaw) Goodman.
Kathryn attended Johnsburg Elementary School and Hadley Luzerne before graduating from North Creek in 1929. She went on to further her education, graduating from St. John’s Long Island Hospital School of Nursing in 1935 as a registered nurse. She later graduated from Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City in 1949 with a bachelor’s degree in public health nursing.
She married Charles X. Frentzos on February 22, 1952 and the couple spent a blissful 38 years together before his passing on August 20, 1990.
Kathryn began her busy career as a staff nurse and head nurse at the Polyclinic Hospital in NYC, then became employed by the visiting nurse service in Albany, where she was chosen from the Capitol District to join the Army Nurse Corp in February of 1941; there she served as a chief nurse for 22 months in the American Theatre of Operations followed by 35 months in the European Theatre of Operations, earning her title as Major, overseeing hospitals in North Africa, Corsica, and Italy. Upon her honorable discharge from the Armed Forces of the United States in 1946 she was the Assistant Director of nursing and school of practical nursing Hospital for Joint Diseases in NYC before becoming the Director of the program in 1950; ten years later she became a clinical instructor at the Newport Hospital of nursing. She was also employed as a staff nurse at the M2 Dispensary in the Newport Naval Hospital and a supervisor and assistant director of the Newport visiting nurse service.
Throughout her life she was a member of the American Nurses Association, serving on various committees in Albany, NYC, and Newport, RI; she was the secretary of the National Association for Practical Nurse Education and Service; and the nursing committee, Newport, RI chapter of American Red Cross where she taught home and disaster nursing to several community and nursing groups.
Kathryn relocated to Warrensburg April 14, 1994 from Portsmouth, RI where she had been living for 39 years.
She was a communicant of St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church.
In 2009 she moved to the Terrace at the Glen at Highland Meadows in Queensbury, then to Adirondack Tri-County Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in North Creek in 2013. Kathryn’s family is greatly appreciative of the staff at both facilities for the wonderful care she received.
Besides her parents, Kathryn was predeceased by her sisters, Frances Jennings and Amelia Huttig, and brothers, John I. Goodman and Philip D. Goodman.
She is survived by her brothers, James A. “Pat” Goodman of North Creek and Edward G. “Ned” Goodman of Johnsburg. She also leaves behind a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Friends may call on Kathryn’s family from 11 am to 1 pm, Friday, June 5, 2015, at Alexander-Baker Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg.
A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at the funeral home at 1 pm, with Sister Linda Hogan, Parish Life Director of St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church, officiating.
Rite of Committal will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery, Middletown, RI.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations in Kathryn’s memory to the Adirondack Tri-County Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 112 Ski Bowl Rd., North Creek, NY 12853.
