Obituary of Doris L. Countryman

Warrensburg: Doris L. Countryman, 102, of Orton Drive, passed away peacefully, Saturday, June 9, 2018 at the Warren Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation surrounded by her loving family. Born November 18, 1915 in Rochester, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Lullabelle (Willoughby) McDermott. She graduated from Cape Vincent High School and went on to obtain her nursing degree from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1938. She started her working career as a school nurse at her alma mater, Cape Vincent High School until relocating to Warrensburg in 1952. Doris began working as a private duty nurse for many years at Glens Falls Hospital and private homes, retiring in her early 80’s. Our mother and grandmother was a true inspiration of caring and love, and may that be her lasting legacy. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her former husband and father of her children, John Countryman; brothers, Dennis and Dean McDermott; grandson, Christian Arehart and son-in-law, John “Jack” Arehart. She is survived by her children, Gretchen Conway of Wayne, PA, Polly Arehart of Warrensburg, Jan Higgins and her husband, John of Warrensburg, and Jac Countryman and his wife, Carol of Queensbury; she is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. At Doris’s request, there are no calling hours scheduled. A graveside service to celebrate her life will be conducted at the convenience of her family in Warrensburg Cemetery with her grandsons as pall bearers. Doris’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to her many caregivers that helped keep her in the comfort of her own home until 100 years old.
