My name is Kara and I have often wondered what happened to our sweet John after he left Wilford Hall. I helped to care for him after he was cleared from the medical floor and until he left. I have so many touching and sweet memories of him. I am sorry for his passing but it is so nice to know he had such an extended family who loved him. He will always live in my heart. Take Good Care John. KRF, USAF 72-76.

I may be a bit behind however I just discovered this notice. I never got the opportunity to meet John. I have heard stories of him and his parents growing up from my dad (John P Mere) and my grandparents (Hugh and Jacqueline Mere). Not knowing much of my dads side of the family outside of stories I began a genealogy project to figure out where the people in the family all come together. That's how I stumbled upon this news. My condolences go out to my extended family.

Steve and Johns Family, We go back over 50 years having gone to WCS together. I now have moved to Ct. but return HOME often and the first memory is of Engles Dept. Store and Jeanette,Gurt,Cal,Mrs Henry along with John and Steve. What a STORE and CREW to be very proud of. Some should be around today. In school John was a great achiever and the APPLE of all the GIRLS both upper and lower classmen. John's life had a turn at a very young age but Steve and Cal kept all of BURGERS informed as to what was taken place. Now once again he is united with his mom and dad and is resting in peace in a better place.I wish I were closer to help celebrate his life. My prayers are with you all at this time. Formerly of Warrenburg NY, I Daniel Leonard, 3rd son of Joseph & Nell Leonard (both deceased) do wish to extend my deepest sympathies to the Engle family, many fond memories come to mind about John though I was in 3rd 4th grade but an avid football fan & later player myself, and of the many times shopping at Engles Dept Store, was an honor to read that John was in the Airforce & an officer & has received full deserved military honors. John joins both my Mom & Dad in heaven, they passed expectedly so, My Dad back in 4/1995, my Mom 9/2001. My eldest brother Jim still resides in town, my next older brother Mick resides in South Carolina and I about 30 miles away from him across the state line near Augusta Ga., feel free to email me. Thank you. Sincerely, Danny Leonard

I'm sorry we're too far away to be with you right now. We were so fortunate to have had the opportunity to know John during his all-too-short time with his family in Washington. His giggles watching television with granddaughter Madeline on his knee will ring in my memory for a very long time. We will miss him.

To the family of John Engle
John, Stephen, and I grew up as "best friends" on Oak Street in Warrensburg and I have many fond memories of the things we did as kids: bowling at "the alleys", playing golf at the "rec field", watching John launch his home-made rockets in the side-yard of his home!
I saw John for the last time in the mid 1970's after he returned home from military service and before he relocated to western New York. Through the years I have thought of him often and of the unique challenges life presented him.
Please accept my condolences at this time of your loss.

As a teenager I had the biggest crush on this guy, to see him at Echo Lake with all those muscles and dark tan,,, what a nice looking, sweet young man.
