North Creek: DeEtta B. VanGuilder, 68, of Whitewater Manor, passed away peacefully in her sleep, Thursday, June 4, 2009 at her home. Born November 6, 1940 in Lake George, she was the daughter of the late Byron and Jennie Mae (Mosher) Straight. DeEttta was a lifelong resident of the area and married her childhood sweetheart, George Gordon VanGuilder on June 10, 1962. The couple resided and raised their family on Ordway Lane in North Creek. She was a longtime member of the American Legion Post 629 Ladies Auxiliary, where she held the office of Sergeant at Arms. She was also a member of the Johnsburg Methodist Church, the Gore Mt. Senior Citizens and enjoyed volunteering at the Adirondack Tri-County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Over the years, DeEtta babysat for more than 100 local children. She was always on the go, helping anyone in need. Her favorite pastime was being with her family. Her beloved husband passed away on December 20, 1997 after 35 years of marriage. Two brothers, James and Robert Straight and her sister, Dorothy Savage have also predeceased her. Survivors include her four daughters, Marjorie Donohue and her husband, John of North River, Angela VanGuilder of North Creek, Pamela VanGuilder of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Jennifer Glode and her husband, Richard of Wevertown; sister, Beatrice VanGuilder of North Creek; brother, Charles Straight of Lake George; sister in law, Alice Waters of Wevertown; eight grandchildren, Lori Moffitt, John Donohue, Luke Donohue, Eli Donohue, Ernie Dunkley II, Michael Dunkley, Ashlee Hitchcock and Mikayla Glode; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be conducted 11 am, Thursday, June 11 at the Johnsburg Methodist Church with the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary beginning the service and followed by the Rev. Jackie Mueller, Pastor officiating. Friends may call on DeEtta’s family one hour prior to the service at the church. Her family extends a heartfelt thank you to the members of the Johnsburg EMS.
