Bolton Landing:
Douglas Bixby Houghton, a summer resident all his life and a full-time Boltonian for 30 years, died January 12, 2017 at the home he built himself in Bolton. He was 68.
At Adirondack Boatworks, he renovated and restored antique and classic wooden boats, a skill he acquired in the late 1980s working at Morgan Marine Co.
Born in St. Louis, the son of Stella Bixby Houghton and Charles G. Houghton, he graduated from St. Louis Country Day School. He attended the University of Texas in Austin before joining the Army in 1968. He was awarded two bronze stars for his service in Vietnam.
In 1972 he married Linda Brown, with whom he had one child, Douglas Corbin Houghton, known by his middle name. Corbin Houghton and his wife, the former Mandy Rozell of Bolton, live in Virginia with their two children, Gabriel and Lily.
In addition to his son, Doug is survived by his two brothers, Charles G. Houghton III of Albany and Peter R. Houghton of Connecticut, and numerous loving cousins.
In addition to his work for others, the passion of Doug’s life was the Bixby family’s collection of boats housed at Mohican Point. Every morning Doug and his two Bernese mountain dogs could be seen near the family boathouse as Doug checked over all the boats to make sure they were fit for the day’s water activities. He took special care of the St. Louis, the family’s 116-year old, wooden electric-powered launch.
A celebration of Doug’s life was held at Frederick’s in Bolton on Saturday and a memorial service will take place this summer.
Donations in Doug’s memory may be made to the Bolton Rescue Squad, Bolton Landing, NY, 12814.
