Obituary of Elsie M. Allen

North Creek: Elsie M. Allen, 86, passed away peacefully Friday, May 1, 2009 at the Adirondack Tri-County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness. Born July 27, 1922 in Northumberland, she was the daughter of the late Jasper and Sylvia (Ellithorpe) Putnam. Elsie attended the District 6 School in Wilton and the Saratoga High School before moving to the Putnam Farm at the foot of Crane Mountain in Johnsburg in 1943. She married Gerald Allen on January 15, 1947 and the couple raised their family on Garnet Lake Road, Johnsburg. She moved to Glens Falls to work for several years before moving to the Countryside Adult Home in Warrensburg. Raised as a devout Christian, Elsie attended many local churches including the Ridge Road Wesleyan and the Thurman Baptist Church. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her brother, Wayne Putnam; her son, James Allen; her former husband, Gerald; and two grandchildren, Cora and LeRoy Allen. She is survived by her three sons: Walter Allen and his wife, Mallory, of Gold Hill, NC; David Allen and his wife, Sharon, of North Creek; and Joe Allen and his wife, Helen, of Johnsburg; her daughter, Diana Caswell and her husband, Jonathan, of Douglas, MA; daughter-in-law, Cathy O. Allen of North Creek; her two sisters, Doris LaSalle of Saratoga, and Myrtle Buyce and her husband, Elmer, of Athol; her brother, Jay Putnam and his wife, Fanny, of Saratoga; and her sister-in-law, Evelyn Putnam of Endicott; along with 19 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends may call on Elsie’s family from 2-4 pm, Sunday, May 3, 2009, at the Thurman Baptist Church, S. Johnsburg Rd., Thurman. Pall Bearers include Douglas, Ken, and Bill Allen, Neil Mason, Leon Goyer, and Gene Mulligan. Funeral services to celebrate Elsie’s life will be conducted at 2 pm, Monday, May 4, 2009 at the Thurman Baptist Church, with Rev. Robert Herrmann, Pastor, and the Rev. Ronald Allen, Pastor of the Sodom Community Church co-officiating. Burial will follow in the Warrensburg Cemetery.
