Obituary of Dempsey A. Baker

Warrensburg: Dempsey A. Baker, 74, of State Rt. 418, passed away Friday, December 9, 2005 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born November 15, 1931 in Thurman, he was the son of the late George and Millicent (Combs) Baker. He was a lifelong resident of the area. In his youth, Dempsey started his long career in the lumber industry working at Nager’s Saw Mill in Wevertown. He then spent two years in the US Army stationed in Japan during the Korean War. Following his return from military service, he married Barbara D. Hall on March 16, 1956. Dempsey worked at the former Warrensburg Board and Paper Co. for 26 years before retiring from Finch Pruyn & Co. in Glens Falls in 1996 after 15 years of faithful service. Gardening, carpentry, working around his home and helping his son, Joe with projects were but a few of his favorite pastimes. Besides his parents, four brothers, Milford, George, James and Kenneth; two sisters, Ida Goodnow, Lena Baker; grandson, Candy Millington, and two great grandsons, Roger Millington and Kale Baker have all predeceased him. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Barbara Baker of Warrensburg; his two daughters, Rose Germain of Saratoga Springs, Debra Penna and her husband, Robert of Thurman; his two sons, Joseph Baker of Warrensburg and Kevin Baker and his wife, Michelle of Cassatt, SC; brother, Sharkey Baker of Deland, FL; two sisters, Grace Stone of Warrensburg and Florence Dingman and her husband, Lloyd of Flora Park, FL; 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call on Dempsey’s family from 6-8 pm Monday evening at the Alexander-Baker Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 8 pm Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Herrmann, Pastor of the Thurman Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Reynolds Cemetery, Thurman. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Warrensburg EMS, Warrensburg, NY 12885 or to the Renal Dialysis Center of the Glens Falls Hospital.
