Obituary of John V. Combs

John V. Combs, 72, of North Creek, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at his home surrounded by his loving children.
Born October 28, 1934 in North Creek, he was the son of the late Victor I. and Mae (Newhart) Coombs of North Creek.
John enlisted in the US Army in 1952 and served as a truck driver and mechanic with the Signal Corp. during the Korean War.
Upon his return from military service in 1955, he ran his own garage in North Creek and for 10 years drove truck for George Ringler.
On June 28, 1958, he married Carol F. (Cole) Combs also of North Creek and the couple raised six children.
John continued his driving career with Anchor Motor Freight and retired after 26 years of service.
He enjoyed traveling across the country with his wife, playing golf, and spending time with his grandchildren.
John was a member of the North Creek Volunteer Fire Department for 50 years and also was an active member of the Johnsburg Rescue Squad for 45 years. He was a 13 year member of the North Creek American Legion Post 629.
Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his beloved wife of 47 years, Carol in December of 2005.
Survivors include his sons, Thomas Combs of Texas and his companion, Shonda Wheeler, Robert Combs and his wife, Kimberly of North Creek; his daughters, Tamara Keiser of Glens Falls, Tonya Leddick and her husband, Vincent of Olmstedville, Tara Sears and her husband, Paul of North Creek, and Trish Gardner and her husband, Simon of Minerva; his sixteen grandchildren; four sisters residing in Indian Lake, Jane Baldwin, Mary Farrell, Alice King and Betty King; his brother, Harold (Skip) Coombs and his wife, Karen of Fort Edward;his mother in law, Lucy Cole of Queensbury; his brother in law, Thomas Cole of Rochester and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on John’s family from 2-4 and 7-9 pm Saturday at the Alexander Funeral Home, Inc, 4479 State Rt. 28, North River.
Members of the American Legion Post will conduct a service at 7:30 pm during the visitation Saturday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 pm Sunday at the North Creek United Methodist Church with the Rev. Diane Marquit, Pastor officiating. Flossie Bates, High Peaks Hospice Chaplain will assist.
Burial with full military and fire co. honors will follow in Union Cemetery, North Creek.
Donations in John’s memory may be made to the Johnsburg Rescue Squad, North Creek Volunteer Fire Department or to a charity of ones choice.
