Obituary of John J. Stewart

Warrensburg: John J. Stewart, 83, of Alden Ave., passed away peacefully, Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at Glens Falls Hospital. Born November 20, 1931 in New Orleans, Louisiana, he was the son of the late David and Betsy (Johnston) Stewart, Scottish immigrants. He married Anne R. Royse on September 2, 1988 after a long courtship in Palm Bay, Florida. John was a salesman and commercial painter throughout the years, travelling throughout the entire continental US. John and his wife enjoyed many vacations and cruises together. He loved gambling at the casino and on the horse races. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by a brother, David Stewart. He is survived by his beloved wife of 29 years, Anne Stewart of Warrensburg; stepchildren, Sarah Rubel of Cary, NC, Robert Smith and his wife, Donna, of Pella Isla, IA, and Paul Smith and his wife, Kim, North Canton, OH; two sisters, Mary Evans and her husband, Edward, of Willmington, DE, and Alexina Gregg of Newcastle, DE; his nephews, Thomas Gregg, Ted Evans and his wife, Mary Ann, and Henry Evans and his wife, Mary Ann; nieces, Betsy Wells and her husband, Henry, Mary Catherine Riley and her husband, John, Betsy Forrest and her husband, Tom, Alexina Stewart and her husband, Hugh, Mary Catherine Carroll and her husband, Tom, Maggie Livingston and Nellie Williamson. He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and cousins Friends may call on John’s family from 5 to 8 pm, Sunday, October 11, 2015 at Alexander Funeral Home, Inc., 3809 Main St., Warrensburg. A funeral service to celebrate his life will take place at 11 am, Monday, at the funeral home with Rev. Thomas Pettigrew officiating. Burial will follow in Warrensburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations in John’s memory to the Special Olympics or to the Easter Seals.
