Obituary of Kenneth C. Hertzner

North River: Kenneth C. Hertzner, 82, of Barton Mines Road, passed away, Friday morning, November 3, 2006 at his home surrounded by his loving family following a long illness. Born July 27, 1924 in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Louis and Anna (Goldman) Hertzner. He was a WW II US Army combat veteran and was present at the Normandy Campaign. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with six Bronze Battle Stars. Ken lived and worked in Brooklyn his entire career. He began as a rigger at the Brooklyn Navel Yard and received a commendation for bravery in saving a fellow workers life while building the USS Constellation. Ken went on to become a letter carrier with the US Postal Service in Brooklyn for 34 years before retiring in 1979. He married Lillian Follett on April 12, 1958. His wife passed away on May 4, 1999 after 41 years of marriage. Ken enjoyed baseball, horse racing, boxing, animals of all kinds, especially dogs, and was an expert crossword enthusiast. Besides his parents and his beloved wife, his brother, Seymour also died before him. Survivors include his son, Alan Hertzner and his wife, Annee of North River; three grandchildren, David Hertzner and his wife, Michelle of Queensbury, Lisa Hertzner of Brandon, FL, Michael Hertzner of Boca Raton, FL; three great grandchildren, Karley, Macey, and Dean-Reese; his sisters, Gertrude Chaplick of West Palm Beach, FL, Mildred Akelson of Queens; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call on Ken’s family from 3-5 pm today (Saturday) at the Alexander Funeral Home, Inc, 4479 State Rt. 28, North River. A funeral service will be conducted at 5 pm follow the visitation at the funeral home.
