Joel R. Clugstone, 56, of Ridge Road, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born March 26, 1955 in Gloversville, he was the son of James L. Clugstone and Ruth M. (Weymouth) Breland.
Joel was a 1973 graduate of Glens Falls High School and attended classes at Adirondack Community College, eventually earning his degree in forestry through Wanakena at SUNY ESF.
He was a self employed building contractor and then began working for the town of Queensbury as the building inspector for over 20 years.
In 2004, he married his soulmate, Betsy Becker by Mayor Blais in the village of Lake George.
He was an accomplished rock climber and was successful in numerous first ascents, earning his name a place in “Adirondack Rock and Ice Climbs” by Thomas R. Rosecrans.
He was an extremely talented musician who enjoyed entertaining family and friends through voice and guitar.
Joel was an active member of the North Queensbury Volunteer Fire Department since 1984. He was a member of the Glens Falls Elks Club, Lodge 81, along with numerous outdoor clubs including Indian Lake Fish & Game, The Opalescent Club (Bourbon Street), and Deer Valley.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Betsy Clugstone of Queensbury; his step-children: Darrah Stranahan and Matt Stranahan; his father, James Clugstone of Saratoga; his mother, Ruth Breland of Moss Point, MS; his brother, Scott Clugstone and his partner, Wallace Norman of NYC; family dog, Sammy J.; along with an aunt, uncle, cousins, step-siblings and extended family.
At Joel’s request, there are no calling hours scheduled.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be conducted at a later date.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the North Queensbury Volunteer Fire Department.
