Obituary of Fred F. Stewart

Please share a memory of Fred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Bakers Mills: Fred Floyd Stewart, Sr. of Post Office Loop, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2006 at Glens Falls Hospital. He was born the fourth of seven children to Matthew Floyd Stewart and Alta (Hitchcock) Stewart on April 13, 1917. He often reminded folks that he was born on Friday the 13th, but no one who ever knew this kind and gentle man would ever believe that it was an unlucky event. He grew up during the hard times of the depression era, but his hard work ethic kept him in a variety of jobs starting at age 17 in the CCC camps. He later worked in a variety of lumber camps and on road construction jobs, including the stretch of route 28 between North Creek and Warrensburg. After a brief stint working for the mine at Tahawus, Fred got a job working for Barton Mines. He became foreman of the maintenance department and worked there until his retirement in 1987. Those who remember him there still miss his leadership and expertise. On May 8, 1937, he was united in marriage to Lareta Ann Dunkley, who survives. Fred and Lareta had three children, Fred, Jr. and his wife Sally (Simpson) Stewart of Spartanburg, SC, Linda Hutchins and her husband Gordon of Malone, and Janice Stewart and her husband L. A. Satou of Arlington, VA. Also surviving are six grandchildren – Stacy Millwood, Eric Stewart, Kristin Whitfield, Joel Stewart, Scott Stewart, and Jeremy Hutchins, as well as eleven great-grandchildren. His sister, Mildred Bates of North Creek, and brother, Earl Stewart of Ticonderoga survive. Besides his parents, his brothers, George and John, and his sisters Rosamund and Mary have all predeceased him. Friends may call on Fred’s family from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, Wednesday evening at the Alexander Funeral Home, Inc., 4479 State Rt. 28, North River. Warrensburg Lodge #425 F&AM will conduct the Masonic service at 7 pm during the visitation at the funeral home. The funeral service will be conducted 1:00 pm, Thursday at the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Bakers Mills with Pastor Dennis Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Bates Cemetery, Johnsburg. Memorial donations may be made to High Peaks Hospice or a charity of choice. Visit www.alexanderfuneralhomes.com for online guestbook, condolences and directions.
