Obituary of Reuben H. Davis
Please share a memory of Reuben to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Olmstedville:
Reuben Davis, 88, of Hardscrabble Road, passed away peacefully, Monday, June 23, 2014, at his home, among the mountains he loved so much.
Born December 10, 1925 in North River, he was the son of the late Hugh and Nettie (Russell) Davis.
At an early age Reuben left his schooling to help provide for his family by working on farms and becoming a guide, hunting and fishing along the Hudson River where he grew up navigating the land and waters.
Like many men of his era, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1944, at the rise of World War II. He was shipped to France as part of the allied offensive where he drove a tank across the French countryside, fighting German soldiers out of France during the “Battle of the Bulge”. He was awarded the good conduct medal, WWII Victory Medal, and the European/American Eastern Campaign Medal for his dedicated service.
Upon his honorable discharge, he met a spirited young lady from New Jersey, Genevieve F. Storm. The couple married on October 10th, 1948 and settled into their home in Olmstedville, where they raised three children and resided throughout their 52 year marriage.
Reuben was employed by Barton Mines until retirement age, but continued to work various jobs that allowed him to be out in nature until 80 years old. He was a man that valued family, hard work, and being a model citizen. He enjoyed fishing, taking long Sunday drives, and could always be found on his front porch, watching nature or awaiting the occasional visitor, and he especially loved to see the neighbor’s cows grazing in the pasture, or his grandson, Billy’s horses feeding on hay.
Besides his parents, Reuben was predeceased by his beloved wife, Genevieve Davis.
He is survived by his three sons, Robert Mueller and wife, Joan, of Olmstedville, twins, Brian Davis of Fort Ann and Bruce Davis of Glens Falls; two grandsons, Billy Mueller and his wife, Jeanette, and Christopher Davis and his spouse, Jeffrey Tamburo, all of Syracuse; four granddaughters, Jan Hogan and her husband, Sean, of Olmstedville, Michele Davis of Hudson Falls, Kasie Winig and her husband, Jeremy, of Saratoga, and Sheri Mueller of Olmstedville; seven great-grandchildren, Shelby Hogan, Jessey Mueller, Jonathan Mueller, Thomas Donahue, Jesse Davis, Richie Davis, and Joshua Davis; a sister-in-law, Genevieve Davis, of North River; and several extended family members.
At Reuben’s request there will be no calling hours scheduled.
A graveside service with military honors will take place at 12:00 pm, Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
Family and friends are invited to gather at the Alexander Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg for a formal procession to the cemetery that will be departing at 10:30 am.
The family would especially like to thank Loretta Galusha, Reuben’s longtime care giver and reliable friend for her dedication, care, and love provided to Reuben for many years.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations in Reuben’s memory to the Minerva Meal Site, 5 Morse Memorial Hwy, Minerva, NY 12851.
