Obituary of Daniel F. Holcomb

Please share a memory of Daniel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Warrensburg: Daniel Holcomb, 79, of Warrensburg, went home to be with The Lord, passing away quietly at Glens Falls Hospital on Thursday, February 19, 2015, after a long battle with respiratory illness. Danny was born July 3, 1935 in Johnsburg, NY, the son of the late Arthur Holcomb and Ethel LaPlanche. He started working very young in life, during the war years, to help support his family, eventually joining the Marine Corps in 1953, where he served as a machine gunner with Company C, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines in Korea. He was always very proud of his military service, his flag and his country. In 1956 he met his beautiful bride-to-be Janet Reed in Warrensburg and asked her out on a date when a friend bet him he wouldn’t dare to. They were married the following year at First Baptist Church on his birthday. Dan was a working man and toiled as a lumberjack, a chef and a construction worker throughout his life. Strong as a bull, he could be just as stubborn, but was full of laughter, jokes and love for everyone around him, including his beloved basset hounds, Bridget and Julie. He enjoyed fishing trips to Pack Forest Lake with his family and loved to hunt, shoot and make maple syrup. An avid reader, he was particularly fond of westerns and reading his Bible. Always quick to help anyone in need in any way he could, even complete strangers were welcome at his dinner table. A founding member of Faith Baptist Church in Warrensburg, Dan served over 40 years as a deacon, the Sunday School superintendent and on the Board of Trustees and was a faithful member of the Faith Baptist Church choir for many years, as well. Dan was predeceased by his older sister, Pauline Murphy of Nantucket, Massachusetts and older brother, David Holcomb, Sr. of Minerva, New York. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Janet (Reed) Holcomb of Warrensburg, two children, Chuck Holcomb and Darcy Ingraham and her husband Larry, also of Warrensburg, four grandchildren, Joshua, Jacob, Jesse and Jeremy Ingraham and a great-granddaughter Evony Ingraham. Surviving extended family members include sister-in-law Mary Gebo and her friend Max Ross, brother-in-law Richard Reed and his wife Cathy, sister-in-law Nancy Venditto and her husband Rocco, brother-in-law Paul Murphy and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Danny’s family from 5 to 7 pm, Monday, February 23, 2015 at the Alexander Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg. A funeral service to celebrate his life will immediately follow the visitation at 7 pm with Rev. Lee B. Call, Pastor of the Faith Baptist Church, officiating. Burial with military honors will be conducted in the spring in the Warrensburg Cemetery at a time to be announced. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and other staff of Glens Falls Hospital for their care and concern for Dan during his stay there. A special thank you also to Alex, the young man who works at Walmart, who was always so helpful and kind when Dan came to shop. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that those who wish may make donations to Faith Baptist Church, P.O. Box 156, Warrensburg, NY 12885.
