Warrensburg:
Sarah Mastro, 96, a 33 year resident of Warrensburg, passed away on Thursday, May 3, 2012, at Glens Falls Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Born on July 10, 1915, in New York City, where she grew up, she actively assisted her family being the oldest sibling of two brothers and one sister. She met her beloved husband, Louis Mastro, a painter and commercial artist and married him in February, 1938. They were married for 71 years.
After leaving the city, they moved to Yonkers, where she raised three children.
Louis commuted to New York City where he worked as president of Hersh-Mastro Studios. Sarah supported her husband’s artistic endeavors as they traveled throughout the U.S and abroad.
When Sarah lived in New York City, she graduated from business school and later worked for Warner-Lambert in Yonkers. When her children were older, she went back to school and earned her Real Estate Broker’s license at Phos Institute. She was also a Notary Public. Sarah was an incredible cook and produced exceptionally fine desserts, which made it understandable why she hosted Christmas and other festive holidays at her house. She was a very talented seamstress making her own and her children’s clothing, including dresses, suits and hats. She also had a passion for gardening and a real love for flowers.
Sarah was quite active in her own community of Homefield, Yonkers. She served as president of The Garden Club, The Women’s Club and The Parent Teacher’s
Association. She started a teenage girls club called The Happy Wanderers where she guided the youngsters in personal growth and developed programs for them in the area of biking, hiking and arts and crafts. In Warrensburg, she sang with a group of senior citizens who performed in various nursing homes throughout the region.
She is survived by her sister, Mary Jane Brauch of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; predeceased by her brothers, Sal and Fred Regalbuto; survived by her son, Joseph Mastro and his wife, Mary, of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Florida; her daughters, Terry Zappala and her husband, John, of Wevertown, NY and Maria Hallahan and her husband, James, of Cooperstown, NY; her grandchildren: Krystin Varriale, Kerri Piemme, Jon-Erik Zappala, Daniel Hallahan and Melanie Mastro Burch; her great grandchildren: Kaitlyn Varriale, Madison Varriale, Jackson Tyler Burch, Ava May Burch and Ciara Kate Burch.
