Obituary of Francis J. Sherman

Warrensburg: Francis J. “Red” Sherman, 92, of Hudson Street, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, September 19, 2012 in the very home he was born and resided in all his life. He was born February 7, 1920 to the late Alonzo and Anna (Gregory) Sherman. Frank graduated from Warrensburg High School at the age of 16. He later set out for California on his 1940 Harley Davidson. Frank was employed by Luther Wilsey and Maltbie Garages and Bell Aircraft before proudly serving his country in US Army Air Corp. during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1945. He was a mechanic and car salesman for several area dealerships including Hickey Ford and Eichler Ford. Frank started his own business venture, Sherman’s X-L Cycle Shop, a Triumph Motorcycle franchise; he also sold new JAWA motorcycles along with used cars. He was later employed by the United States Postal Service, delivering mail and working as a custodian in the Warrensburg branch. He married Shirley Bell on March 20, 1965 at the West Glens Falls Community Church. Frank was a member of the American Motorcycle Association and Haskell Brothers, Post 4821 VFW, where he served as Chaplain for 13 years. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Shirley Sherman of Warrensburg; his children: Carol Palmateer and her husband, Craig of Hadley; Joseph Sherman of Smyrna, GA; and Faith McGinnis and her husband, Paul of Orange, MA; two grandchildren, Ian and Seth Palmateer; and one cousin, Carl Gregory of Ohio. Friends may call on Frank’s family from noon to 1:30 pm, Friday, September 21, 2012 in the Epworth Hall at the Warrensburg First United Methodist Church, 3890 Main St., Warrensburg. A funeral service to celebrate his life will follow the visitation at 1:30 pm, Friday, at the Church with Rev. Stephen Andrews, Pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Warrensburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Warrensburg First United Methodist Church, 3890 Main St., Warrensburg.
