Thinking of my Godmother, Aunt Mary Ellen, always brings a smile to my face. She was beautiful and always had a smile, sometimes accompanied by a rabbit nose twitch and a kind word to say. Often giving advice when asked or when she thought it was needed.
When I was young and we lived in the Bronx, she took me to get my first photo taken on a pony. I was decked out in my finest cowboy outfit. Probably a gift from her as well. As I grew up, she would always take me on a trip for my birthday. I could pick from the Bronx Zoo, the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty. I always picked the zoo. There were so many animals, souvenir stands and food vendors. I loved spending time with her.
We had great times! Some Sundays my dad would take us to visit and eat Grandma’s goulash or once in a while dad would bring in a sack of White Castle hamburgers!
We would all look forward to Pop Pop’s birthday every year in Lakewood, NJ. I remember sometimes Mary Ellen would take me swimming in the lake. When we got back, we would enjoy all the food, drink and music in the evening with family and friends.
Mary Ellen would always come to my special events like First Communion, Confirmation and graduation.
It was an honor to be included in Mary Ellen and John’s wedding. She glowed on her wedding day. She couldn’t have married a nicer guy. Uncle John, you are the best.
And then there were the ski trips. Always fun! The “hand puppet” that provided so much laughter when Uncle John put it on. He really surprised me. The trips to the store for “provisions” and the great deals Mary Ellen found on wine. She taught me how to ski and I’ve passed it along to my children and then to my grandchildren.
Mary Ellen left the world a better place and she will be missed dearly.

Dear Mr. J I am so sorry for your loss. I think of the both of you often and our weekends at Gore Mountain. I am so thankful that you knew mom and dad and through them I got to meet you Johnny and James. Some of my fondest memories of us all being together church after skiing in the lodge, Monty Python and the holy Grail, Jamie and I sitting in a snowbank listening to radio mystery theater after dinner. And Mrs. J’s love for cats. Thank you for Letting me share a part of your family. Richelle Armstrong
